Three Days of Holy Feasting: A culinary perspective on the Triduum

Posted: March 23, 2016 | Author: Fr. Leo

Tomorrow begins the Sacred Triduum - the Three Holiest Days of the Year!  For me, and hopefully for you, it's time of Sacred Feasting!  The Three Holy Days give us great opportunities to make food and faith connections.  Let me explain and hopefully you'll be able to find the "food references" in these Feast Days!

Holy Thursday: It's a day to commemorate the Last SUPPER, and that Jesus gives to us the one bite of the BLESSED FRUIT and a DRINK from the CUP of Eternal Salvation because He knows we need a remedy for the times when we have EATEN of the forbidden fruit!  He also goes to the Garden of Gesthemane and prays under the OLIVE tree, asking: "Let this CUP pass me by, but not as I will, but Your Will be done!"

Good Friday:  Even though we abstain and fast, we consider how Jesus says, "I THIRST!"  Yes, God always feeds us, but we have the responsibility to "feed God" by feeding those who hunger and thirst, because whatever you do to the least of your brothers and sisters, you do to Jesus!  So, give Jesus a cup of water to drink by feeding the poor!  Also, we will approach and venerate the Wood of the Cross, on which hung the Savior of the world!  The wood of the cross IS The TREE OF LIFE - from which hung the Blessed FRUIT, that if we eat it in faith, we become more like Jesus. Remember, we are what we eat!

The 'Mond' Crucifixion by Raphael (circa 1502). Notice the angels catching the Sacred Blood of Christ in a cup, symbolic of the Eucharist.

And finally, Holy Saturday: We will see and hear tons of food references in the Holy Saturday celebrations.  The Easter FIRE will purify us and also give us light; the creation account of Genesis tells us that God created FOOD before he created humanity!  We will also hear many references to the LAMB of God.  Let's not forget the blessing of the HOLY WATER from the fount of life.  And finally, we will welcome newly Baptized and Confirmed (using Holy OIL) Catholics to participate in the EATING and DRINKING of Holy Communion!

"Agnus Dei", the Lamb of God.

These three days can feed your soul.  Come hungry and Happy Easter Blessings to you and your Family!

Let us pray

Father in Heaven, may these three Holy Days be for us a time of healing, refreshment and spiritual renewal.  Help our families, and our universal family of faith, come closer together in love so that we can rise again from all that harms a life of fidelity. May those coming into the Church be filled with a sense of "homecoming" and may our faithful continue to reach out and feed those who hunger for you. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Food for Thought

(1)  How will you participate in the Holy Triduum?
(2)  Which is your "favorite" of the Three Holy Days?
(3)  What are you going to prepare for your Easter Day Feast?
