It’s been quite the past few weeks!  Travels here, there and everywhere, plus the full load at the seminary. Recently, an interview for a paper in Harrisburg, PA asked how it all gets done.  The real answer is:  GOD!  The energy can only come when God supplies it, and he supplies it if we ask for it in prayer.  But, this entry won’t be a sermon, but just a little update.

So, here goes:

Bishop Guilfoyle HS in Altoona, PA hosted a Grace Before Meals event.  Awesome set of students, faculty and a bunch of parents even came.  They even had t-shirts!

img_0128There were tons of kids who were doing all they could to get the food we prepared – bite sizes of the Monte Cristo sandwiches!

img_0106We had great sponsors, including US Food Services.  One of the reps who helped me cook was even a black belt martial artists.   Thank God he didn’t challenge me to a surprise Throw Down!

Since, I’m actually writing this blast from the plane – yes, Airtran now allows internet access on board – I won’t have time to write about the other trips to Texas and then LA.  That’ll come at another time, as soon as I can find another flight with internet access!

  • Hi Fr. Leo-

I wanted to drop a quick note as a pre-welcome to Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School and the Altoona faith community. We are really looking forward to meeting you and I have tried to get many families hooked on your weekly emails as I have become. It is so nice to take a moment each week and read what you are up to. I always come away feeling peaceful–at least for a few minutes during the hectic day.

My sister and her family heard you speak at their parish in Roanoke, VA and she “introduced” us to you. As a mom of four, I have treasured the family mealtime and now that the two oldest girls are away in college, it is even more of a treasure when they can be here and the family is all together.

I really connected to this week’s email when you spoke about special dietary needs and meeting those physically and spiritually. I became a Meals on Wheels volunteer about a year ago and we serve those less fortunate or just have the need for meals due to health or even lonliness really. The meals are prepared in an industrial kitchen and they are packaged and labeled according to dietary restrictions, like diabetic or low sodium. We are providing food but also we are providing a check in system so that these people have someone making sure they are OK.

I started out doing this thinking I was simply bringing food to people, most of which are elderly, but it has become much more to me. Often the clients do not have any contact with people throughout there day and I may just be the one person they actually speak to that day. I try to give a little extra time to those that would like to chat just to take away a little of the loneliness. I have taken my kids along when they can go and not only do the clients enjoy that, my kids are enjoying meeting them as well. If they cannot go with me one week, they always ask how everyone was that day. So it has become a family committment as well.

Anyway, the connection I made after reading what you wrote is that God is filling my spiritual need while I might fill the needs of my clients with food and that feels great!

Again, I look forward to meeting you!
    Regards,
    Lisa

  • Father Leo,

Got to meet you at Bishop Guilfoyle HS this past Friday, the 29th, and I cannot thank you enough for the opportunity to actually talk with you for even a couple minutes. In my profession, I have been able to meet many celebrities, and never been truly overwhelmed by their presence. I guess my excitement on Friday was really because of your message – simple, lots of relevant stories, and beautiful connections to our faith . . . and food!

I am sure you will receive pictures from BG but thought you would enjoy these from the local newspaper.

God Bless You and I will have you and the GBM team in my prayers!
