OK, so Lent is a time for repentance and seeking forgiveness. So, here’s two that I’d like to ask forgiveness of you right off the bat!
First: Sorry for putting a “meat” recipe in this week’s blast – which just happens to fall on Ash Wednesday – a day for fasting and abstinence for Catholics. I didn’t mean to “tempt” anyone, but I was playing off the “snow ball” and “meat ball” imagery.

Secondly, please forgive me for the error / typo on the caption regarding St. Monica (St. Augustine’s mother) and St. Helen (Constantine’s mother). I confused the two saints. And while I know who is who, I think I was just typing so fast that I confused them. The picture is mom and son praying at tomb of St. Monica in the Basilica of Saint Augustine, Rome, Italy.

The many comments I received about this error showed me that people DO read these blasts. So, while it proved I’m a typo-error-grammar mistaking kinda’ guy, I’m also very impressed that people took the time to read and reply to a caption of a photo. WOW – you all DO care!
So, thanks for reading, replying, responding and FORGIVING!

Father Leo,
Posted by Fr. Leo on February 17th, 2010 at 6:07 pm.I recently subscribed to your newsletter and look forward to each one. I am 16 years old and homeschooled through PACyber Charter School. I had gone, my first time, to last year’s Mount 2000 retreat with my parish. It was an extremely moving experience. I found how to deeply pray and started thinking of my vocation. I also want to look into going to the Mount St. Mary’s University in the future. However, when I heard the retreat was cancelled this year I was very distraught. But I read the No Greater Love newsletter and it cheered me up. I had always thought of all the people who organized the event but never in that way. But what I wanted to say is Happy St. Valentines Day! I don’t have any boyfriend or anyone to call a ‘valentine’ but I always consider Jesus to be my true Valentine.
After reading the last newsletter, I really felt compelled to write to you. I didn’t know about the Grace Before Meals before last year, and I remembered you from your homily when I saw you on Food Network. That is when I looked for you website. I am so glad God has blessed you with being on such a well known show that your movement has grown.
Thank You for all you do,
Elizabeth Gibson
Wasn’t Saint Monica the mother of St. Augustine’s mother and not St. Helen?
Posted by Fr. Leo on February 17th, 2010 at 6:07 pm.Dear Father Leo,
Posted by Fr. Leo on February 17th, 2010 at 6:08 pm.Happy Valentine day to you and your family. Every week I would send your Grace Before Meal Reflections to my family and friends in the Philippines. My former co-teachers said that they at times integrate some of your thoughts in their lessons and my family is just happy to read and reflect what you have been sharing to us. God bless you and may you always be guided by the Holy Spirit in everything you do.

Fr. Patalinghug,
I receive your blasts and I want you to know that though I am not Catholic, my paternal Grandfather was very devout to the Catholic Faith. I was bestowed with his rosary at his passing when I was a child because he wrote I always liked to feel them when he was praying at his bedside each night. I was raised Methodist and am the children’s volunteer ministry coordinator because we are too small for a paid minister in that role. I was introduced to your ministry through the CBS show on Sunday mornings that is always full of the positive. I have learned from you, prayed more, thought more and been able to bring your message to my congregation as well as learn about the faith that my Grandfather so richly believed in. Many have signed up for your blasts as well from my church. Thank you for your time, I can not imagine how hard it is to balance everything. Just know that you reach a wide audience and we appreciate it. Have a great day!
Respectfully,
Jennie Church-Morehead

Hi Fr. Leo,
I have been receiving your Grace before Meals blasts since November 2007, when I saw you give a talk at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Roswell, GA. They are so wonderfully inspirational! Thank you for taking the time to communicate with us lay folks.
I wanted to make a correction to something you wrote in this blast. Before you prepare yourself to drink from the cup of humility, I do have something to say that will make the sip a bit sweeter: the only reason I knew that you mis-wrote is because you educated me from previous blasts! Meditate on that for a moment. Now here you go….are you ready???:
St. Helen was the mother of Constantine, not Augustine; St. Monica was St. Augustine’s mother.
See, that wasn’t so bad. =) I just had to say it because I was proud of myself for noticing it. I’m sure that’s what you meant to write and you just got your “-ine” names confused, Don’t worry, I don’t think any less of you and I’m sure no one else does either, including the mismatched moms. Consider your small mistake the blessing that finally impelled me to write to you and express my appreciation for you.
As a final comforting thought: At least you didn’t say that Eve was the mother of Jesus! (Actually, in a way she was, being the “mother of all the living.” Who is/was more alive than Jesus?! Yet another thing to meditate on…). =)
Pax et bonum, pater!

Posted by Fr. Leo on February 17th, 2010 at 6:11 pm.Hi Fr. Leo, Just a little about the photo with Mom and son at a painting of St. Helen. She was the mother of St. Constantine, and St. Augustine’s Mom was St. Monica, right? I enjoy your blog or emails to my address; I’m 67, and even though your message is great for young people, it’s very much appreciated by me as well. Thanks for all the good work you do. Did you hear that Communists were unable to break the family unit in a certain satellite country (I believe it was Latvia), until they took away the dining room tables? Goes to show the power of the family togetherness is also that necessary “glue” of sharing food. God bless, Peggy
Posted by Fr. Leo on February 17th, 2010 at 6:17 pm.Good morning Father Leo.
My name is Martha Ortega and I was blessed to see you on the food network for the first time. Until then I was not aware of your existence, but since I’ve become part of your email updates.
The reason why I’m writing you is that I feel so lost. You seem so different from other priest and I wish I was closer to your area. I reside in North Mankato Minnesota and there is no one like you in the area. You seem to relate and have the ability to reach people like no other father I’ve ever known.
Would you be attending any conference or trainings in Minnesota in the future what I could come and meet you?
Best Regards,
Martha

Posted by Jackie Parkes on February 18th, 2010 at 6:24 am.Hi Fr. Leo,
Watched Life on the Rock on EWTN and enjoyed the show. I went to your website and noticed the traditional prayer before meals needs the words “From thy Bounty” added.
Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts which we are about to receive, from Thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen
