Mother's Day is always a great day to show mothers how much we love them and want to recognize them for their constant sacrifice and selflessness. Mothers are instrumental in the formation of who we are and what we value. My mother steered me towards a life of faith and also a life of food – she taught me a lot! We rely on mothers in so many ways to say the least, so let us take this as a an opportunity to use this as a “feast day” for mothers!
To help you get started, I want to point you to my first book Plating Grace: Recipes & Inspirations for Family Meals & Family Life (2010), which shares family traditions, recipes, and conversation starters to help approach holidays as feast days. For Mothers Day, I share a simple Monte Cristo Sandwich recipe for families to make for the mother – a great “breakfast in bed” meal that captures so many flavors and demonstrates in a small way how to serve those who have so often served you. And that can be the beginning of meal opportunities throughout the year that encourage us to feast with those we love around the dinner table. Tomorrow is a great opportunity to start a new tradition and cook up a great meal for mom!

Speaking of mothers, today is the 100th Anniversary of the first Marian Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima, who appeared to three children to encourage them to pray for world peace, the conversion of Russia, and to recite the rosary for the salvation of souls – a message that seems as relevant today as it was then. With a degree in Mariology, I can go on and on about the importance of Mary, our Spiritual Mother and Mother of Christ. But in the very least, let us recognize how much Christ loved His mother so that we may do the same. Let us offer thanks to God for the mothers in our lives that have shown us what love looks like, and may we celebrate them tomorrow on what should be a special feast day!

Let Us Pray
God, we praise you for the mothers you've provided us – our mother who conceived us and Your mother who conceived Christ. We ask that we truly celebrate the women who have given so much of themselves so we could have a chance to live and to have what we do. We pray for those who have struggles or who have suffered loss or hurt at this time, and ask that through the intercession of Our Lady of Fatima, peace may be granted to them and to this world. God bless all mothers and their children and may the miracle of life be cherished by all. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
For the special intentions of mothers, we ask Mary's intercession: Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the Fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the our of our death, Amen.
